Musk Unveils New Name And Logo For Twitter
Elon Musk, the current owner of Twitter, and the platform’s new CEO made an announcement on Sunday.
They revealed that Twitter will get a new name and logo. It will leave behind its well-known bird logo and take the name ‘X’.
The social media platform also plans to quickly dive into payments, banking, and commerce.
The History of Twitter’s Name and Logo
Twitter started in 2006. Its name comes from the noise of birds talking to each other.
The company used a bird logo from its early days.
According to the design website Creative Bloq, the company bought a picture of a light blue bird for $15.
This symbol has been the face of Twitter since then.
The Introduction of ‘X’
Twitter’s new name and logo were introduced in a tweet late Sunday night.
Linda Yaccarino, Twitter’s chief executive, tweeted a picture of the new logo.
The logo is a white ‘X’ on a black background. She wrote, “X is here! Let’s do this.”
Elon Musk also made changes to his profile on Sunday night. He changed his profile picture to the new logo.
He described it as “minimalist art deco”. Musk also updated his Twitter bio to “X.com”.
Now, this link takes you to twitter.com.
Musk had posted a tweet earlier. He wrote, “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make (it) go live worldwide tomorrow.” He also revealed that under the new name, a post would be known as “an X”.
However, these changes were not visible on the website as of 0630 GMT Monday.
Musk’s Vision for Twitter
Twitter’s parent company had already been named the X Corporation by Musk.
He had shared before that his takeover of the social media giant was part of his plan to create ‘X, the everything app’.
This is a nod to X.com, a company Musk started in 1999. A later version of this company became the huge payments company PayPal.
This ‘everything app’ could work as a social media platform and could also have messaging and mobile payments.
Linda Yaccarino tweeted earlier on Sunday, “Powered by AI, X will connect us in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.” Yaccarino was an advertising sales executive at NBCUniversal before Musk hired her last month to become Twitter’s CEO. She has shared that the social media platform is on the edge of expanding its scope.
Yaccarino also tweeted, “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centred in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.” This gives us a hint about the future direction of the newly named platform.
Only time will tell how these changes will impact the platform’s current users and its position in the world of social media.
